As the scorching summer ends and the crisp, cool breeze of autumn begins to roll in, Japan transforms into a breathtaking canvas of red, orange, and golden leaves. For many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Japan, autumn is not just a time of beauty — it’s also a rare chance to unwind and recharge after long workweeks.
If you’re lucky enough to have a day off this season, here are the top autumn destinations in Japan perfect for OFWs looking for a quick escape without breaking the bank.
Best time to visit : Mid-November to early December
Known as Japan’s cultural heart, Kyoto is stunning all year round — but autumn is truly magical. Picture golden ginkgo trees, fiery red maple leaves, and centuries-old temples framed by nature's artwork.
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Togetsukyo Bridge
Kiyomizudera Temple
(perfect for panoramic views)
Eikando Temple
(famous for glowing red momiji leaves)
Take an overnight bus from Tokyo or Osaka to save money. Bring your own snacks and drinks to avoid expensive tourist food.
Best time to visit : Late October to early November
Only two hours from Tokyo, Nikko offers a refreshing escape with its mix of nature, history, and vibrant autumn foliage. The area is less crowded than Kyoto but equally scenic.
Toshogu Shrine
(UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Lake Chuzenji
Kegon Falls
(especially beautiful framed by red leaves)
Buy a Nikko Pass (from Tobu Railway) for unlimited train + bus rides — ideal for day trips!
Best time to visit : Late October to mid-November
Want to see Mt. Fuji surrounded by autumn leaves? Head to the Fuji Five Lakes area. It’s peaceful, scenic, and perfect for a reflective solo trip or bonding time with fellow OFWs.
Lake Kawaguchi
(most popular spot)
Oishi Park
(with Fuji in the background)
Maple Corridor (Momiji Kairo)
(a tunnel of red leaves!)
Go early in the day to avoid crowds and capture the best views. Look for 高速バス (kōsoku bus) from Shinjuku or Yokohama — cheaper than the train.
Best time to visit : Mid-November
Nara is perfect for those near Osaka or Kyoto, offering wide parks, historical temples, and deer that roam freely. In autumn, the trees around Nara Park and the temples turn into a warm spectrum of colors.
Nara Park
Todai-ji Temple
Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Pack your lunch and enjoy a quiet picnic under the trees — deer may come to visit, so be ready!
Even if you can't travel far, Japan is full of local parks and riversides that offer beautiful fall foliage. Some examples:
Yoyogi Park
(Tokyo)
Ueno Park
(Tokyo)
Osaka Castle Park
(Osaka)
Maruyama Park
(Kyoto)
Bring your camera, some Filipino snacks, and spend your day relaxing close to nature.
Dress in layers – mornings and evenings can be cold!
Check the foliage forecast – colors change fast depending on region.
Travel early or on weekdays – to avoid weekend crowds.
Bring a power bank – you’ll be taking lots of photos for sure!
As OFWs, we work hard — and we deserve moments of peace, wonder, and joy. Autumn in Japan offers a chance to pause, breathe in the cool air, and feel connected to something beautiful.
So grab your camera, call your kaibigan, and make the most of your day off this autumn.
