According to recent announcements, Skype is closing down in May 2025. The primary reason for this is that Microsoft is shifting its focus to Microsoft Teams.
Since its launched in 2003, Skype, an internet-based communication, allow users to make free voice and video calls anywhere in the world. While Skype remained a popular communication tool after Microsoft acquired it in 2011, the emergence of newer collaboration platforms led to a gradual decrease in its usage.

This allows them to allocate resources and development efforts more effectively.
Microsoft is prioritizing the development of Teams, which has become its flagship communication and collaboration platform.
They are integrating features and technologies, including AI, into Teams.
The way people communicate has evolved, and Microsoft is adapting to those changes.
Teams offers a more comprehensive suite of features for both personal and professional communication.
