In Japan, it’s common for students to start working part-time, known as アルバイト (arubaito) around the age of 15 or 16. Whether it’s to gain independence, save for the future, or simply have some extra spending money, juggling school and work can be a challenge. While working part-time offers valuable experience, it’s important to maintain a balance so that your studies and well-being don’t suffer. Here are some practical tips to help you manage both effectively.
When looking for a part-time job, prioritize flexibility. Some jobs offer shifts that fit well with school hours, such as working evenings, weekends, or during holidays. Planning your weekly schedule in advance can help ensure you have enough time for studying, working, and resting.

It’s easy to take on too much, especially when you’re eager to earn money. However, I can speak from personal experience that overworking can lead to burnout, stress, and declining grades. Understand how much you can handle without overwhelming yourself.
How to avoid burnout :
Limit your work hours during busy school periods, such as exam season.
Communicate with your employer if you need fewer shifts.
Get enough sleep and take breaks when needed.
Balancing school and work doesn’t mean sacrificing all your free time. Taking care of your mental and physical health is just as important. Be sure to set aside time for your hobbies, relaxation, and spending time with friends and family.
