When you think of Japan, you might picture sushi, cherry blossoms, or fast trains. But Japan is also known for something else — it’s one of the healthiest countries in the world.
People in Japan live a long time and often stay active even in old age. This is thanks to healthy habits, good food, and a strong healthcare system. Let’s take a closer look.
One big reason for Japan’s good health is their traditional food. Meals often include fish, rice, vegetables, and fermented foods like miso soup and natto. These foods are full of nutrients and low in bad fats.
People also eat smaller portions and often have many small dishes instead of one big plate. There’s also a saying in Japan: "hara hachi bu", which means “eat until you are 80% full.” This helps people avoid eating too much.
In Japan, people walk and bike a lot. Many use public trains and buses, so they walk to stations every day. Even in the countryside, people stay active by gardening or doing chores.
Elderly people also like to do group exercises. One common routine is "rajio taisō", which are short exercises played on the radio that many do in parks or at home.
Japan has a good healthcare system that everyone can use. It doesn’t cost too much, and people are encouraged to go for check-ups often.
Doctors in Japan don’t just treat sickness — they try to find health problems early. This helps prevent serious diseases like heart problems or obesity.
In 2024, people in Japan lived an average of 84 years — the highest in the world. And many of them stay active and happy even as they get older.
One area, Okinawa, is famous for having lots of people who live over 100 years. Experts say it’s because they eat lots of vegetables, have strong friendships, and live with purpose — something they call "ikigai".
Every country is different, but we can learn a lot from Japan’s healthy way of living. Simple habits — like eating fresh food, walking every day, and staying connected with others — can make a big difference.
Want to try it yourself? Start small: eat more vegetables, take a walk, and enjoy little things in life. Your body and mind will thank you.
